About Hosted Exchange
The term hosted exchange refers to a service in the telecommunications industry whereby a provider makes an e-mail box and space available on a server so its clients can host their data on the server. The provider manages the hosted data of its clients on the server. Clients can access their emails, address book, task management and documents from different places and through various media. The e-mails are routed to a laptop or mobile phone through push technology.
System
The prerequisite for the use of this function is an exchange server. The market leader is the Microsoft Exchange Server, but there are also other providers. The messaging system works regardless of network size, both in the intranet and the internet and uses MAPI (an RPC protocol) to enable the collaboration between groups. It can be connected both to PCs and Macintosh computers. This technology also allows connection to a BlackBerry. It is also possible to connect the iPhone to an exchange mailbox if it is a 3G model, with the functions MobileMe and the iPhone / iPod touch software 2.0.
Service
Companies that have their own IT department can also manage their own exchange servers. This is financially sensible - if considered with respect to the exchange mailboxes - commencing from a number of mailboxes of 50 to 70 . Existing freemail providers offer free mailboxes, which can push e-mails and calendars to a mobile phone. This is sufficient for personal use. However, in order to connect a mailbox from one's own domain or to provide multiple users simultaneous access to the calendar and task management it makes senses to switch to a hosted exchange provider. The service generally includes the installation of the synchronized programs and data on a mobile phone, laptop and a stationary computer, the hosting of data and software support, plus virus and spam protection, secure encryption of data and regular backups.
